The annual Welcome Back Picnic held on August 30th, 2009 at the Seminole Reservation was filled with food, games, and athletes ready to have fun before hitting the books. Hosted by the Office of Student Services and the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), the Welcome Back Picnic provides a venue for athletes to meet and interact with one another through activities that promote unity.
These activities included beach volleyball, canoeing, kayaking, dancing (courtesy of DJ X), card games, and much more. From freshmen newcomers, to veteran seniors, smiles and laughter emanated from the faces of everyone.
“Today was really fun. As a transfer student it was really good getting to interact with everybody and just get to mingle. I really enjoyed it,” says sophomore transfer Michelle Jenije from the Women’s Track and Field team.
Upon looking around during the picnic, athletes from all teams were intermingled dancing, playing, and eating together. Various teams challenged each other head on in a beach volleyball competition.
“I was playing volleyball; we did a Track versus Basketball game. Despite their height, they only beat us by one point,” says Junior Track & Field athlete Andrew Jacobs.
Both Sophomore Joshua Rodriguez and Junior transfer Richard Wint of the Football team appeared to have fun while throwing the football around to members of other teams.
“My favorite part of the event was the snow cones,” replied Freshman Swimmer Nick Klein when asked what he enjoyed the most about the day.
Overall the event was successful in that it helped to build a sense of community within the athletes.
“I think it was the best turnout we ever had, I liked that the teams interacted more than they had in the past…A lot of people stayed until the end, and nobody got hurt, so I get to keep my job for another year,” said Dr. John Lata, Director of Student Services.
Thank you to SAAC, the Office of Student Services, the Staff and Administrators! A special thank you to all the student-athletes who made this year’s Welcome Back Picnic the best ever!
