KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. — Florida State’s Rick Westbrook shot an
outstanding two-under par 70 and is only two strokes off of the individual
lead following first round play at the Cleveland Golf/Kiawah Island
Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament at the Osprey Point Golf Club.
Westbrook was one of 13 golfers who earned par or better during the round
and has helped the Seminole men’s golf team to a ninth place standing
heading into Tuesday’s final round.
Westbrook shot 34 on the front nine and closed out the back nine
with a 36. He trails the current medalist, T.J. Washburn of Mississippi
State, by only two strokes.
Florida State senior Mark Donaldson is on Westbrook’s heals as he
shot a two-over par 74 and finished the first round in a tie for 21st
place. Al Griebler is only eight shots off the pace (four-over par 76) and
in a tie for 41st place.
The Seminoles are only nine strokes behind the current team leader,
Mississippi State. The current second place team (South Alabama) and the
ninth-place Seminoles are separated by only eight strokes.
Florida State is playing in its first event of the fall season and
the first event of the Nicky Goetze era. Goetze was named the head coach
of the Seminoles on August 16.
