Westrup And Larsson Lead Seminole Women’s Golf Team At Lady Gamecock Classic

March 11, 2006

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. –
Seminole golfers Caroline Westrup and Caroline Larsson are tied for fourth and six respectively in the individual standings and have led the Florida State women’s golf team to a fourth place standing after the first 36 holes of the Lady Gamecock Classic at the University Club. Westrup has played even-par golf and Larsson is only one stroke above par with only 18 holes remaining the event. Both of the Seminole golfers are within three strokes of the overall individual leader, Maria Martinez of Auburn.

Auburn shattered the Lady Gamecock Classic team single-round scoring record and stormed into the lead at the event after carding a 10-under-par 278 in Saturday’s second round. The sixth-ranked Tigers shaved 26 strokes off their first-round score and now own a six-stroke lead on Tennessee heading into Sunday’s final round. Auburn’s Martinez holds a two-stroke lead on teammate Nicole Hage and Tennessee’s Nicole Smith for the lead after two rounds, as Martinez’s three-under-par score of 73-68=141 tops the individual leader board after two rounds.

Westrup (Ahus, Sweden) fell from the individual lead as she carded a two-over par score of 74 and has an even par two-day total of 144. She carded a two-under par score of 70 in the first round. Westrup is one of only five golfers who are at even par or better through the first two rounds and is only three strokes off of the pace set by Auburn’s Martinez.

Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) carded an even par score of 72 in the second round and has a one-over par total of 145 through the first two rounds of the event. Only a club’s length from the top of the leader board, Larsson is one stroke out of fifth place and only four strokes out of the lead. She is looking to earn the fourth top-10 finish of her career.

Sophomore Whitney Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) showed the biggest improvement of the day for the Seminoles as she carded an even par 72 in the second round. She rebounded from an 83 in the first round and improved her standing by 12 positions in the individual listing of players. Senior Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) is tied for 39th in the individual standings with Brummett while junior Kayla Shaul (Cumming, Ga.) is in a tie for 50th place.

The final round of the event begins Sunday morning at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start.
