SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State’s Caroline Westrup is in a tie for 52nd place after shooting a 2 over par 74 in the first round of the 68th Annual U.S. Women’s Open conducted by the USGA at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y. Westrup led a quartet of former Seminole greats through the first round of the major championship including Kristin Tamulis and Karen Stupples (both tied for 65 with identical scores of 75) and Macarena Silva (tied for 133rd place with a score of 79).

Each player in the field is chasing Ha-Neul Kim of South Korea who shot a 6 under park score of 66. A total of 36 players finished the first round at or below par with 27 finishing at 1 under par or better.

Westrup, the only four-time All-American in Seminole golf history, carded a 2 over par score of 74 and is in a tie for 59th place in the standings. She carded 15 holes at par or better with one birdie, 14 holes scored at par and three bogeys. Westrup played the back nine at even par with a birdie on the par three hole No. 12 and a bogey on the par five hole No. 16. She was at or below par on nine of her last 10 holes and finished her round even par on her final 10 holes.

“I played solid golf today,” said Westrup who admitted that she had never been so nervous before the start of a round in her career. “This is a very tough course; if you are off target just a little bit you can be punished. I would have liked to have finished at even par but overall I am satisfied with a very solid day of golf.”

Stupples, who is playing in her 10th career U.S. Open, finished the first round in a tie for 78th place with a 3 over par score of 75. She played one of the most exciting holes of the days as she carded an eagle three on the par five hole No. 18 to close out her round. Stupples was 1 stroke under par during her back nine with one eagle, two birdies and three holes scored at par.

Tamulis, who began her round on hole No. 10, played her best golf on her first nine holes with three birdies and four holes played at par or better. She carded six birdies during the round and closed her round at 1 under par over her final three holes of the round.

Silva, an All-ACC selection at Florida State as a junior in 2010, carded a 7 over par score of 79 and is in a tie for 38th place. She played outstanding golf on her back nine and was a total of two over par with one birdie and five holes scored at par on holes 10 through 18 to finish with her score of 79. Silva was two strokes over par on her final 10 holes after playing her first eight holes at 5 over par.

“Not of the best 79 but I made some good shots! Tomorrow at 12:52 all over again! Enjoying this experience,” said Silva on her Facebook page.

Former Seminole Jane Geddes won the 1986 U.S. Open Women’s championship in an 18-hole playoff win over Sally Little. Geddes finished with a 71 and Little a 73 during the playoff round.
