Will She Do It? Summer Weissing Seeks To Break FSU Single Season Dig Record

Nov. 22, 2005

With two matches left against two of the top teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Florida State libero Summer Weissing (Boca Raton, Fla./Olympic Heights HS) needs 26 digs to break the FSU single season dig record.  Weissing, a native of Boca Raton, Fla., will tie former Seminole standout and three-time AVCA All-Region honoree, Luiza Ramos, with 25 digs.  Ramos’ record of 507 digs was set during the 1994 season. Since that time, no one has been in the same area code as Ramos and now Weissing.  The next person in line is Joan Morris who had 460 in 1986.

The record is very attainable as Weissing totaled 28 digs in a five-game victory over North Carolina last Sunday.

“I have never been one to concentrate on records,” said Weissing.  “But I do recognize that it would be a prestigious honor to break the record.  For now, my main focus is on winning the final two matches of the season.”

The value of Weissing on the Seminole volleyball team is enormous and in just two seasons her statistics speak volumes.  Last year she completed the 2004 campaign with 399 digs which was the ninth-best single season record.

Since the beginning of her career, Weissing has ranked in the Top 10 of the ACC in defense.  Almost unheard of in collegiate volleyball, she has reached the 30-dig plateau in two matches. Weissing has recorded double-figure digs in all but three matches this season.  In two of those matches, she had nine.

Weissing and the Seminoles will take to the court for the final time this week with a match against Duke on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. followed by a Wake Forest contest at noon on Friday.
