FORT WORTH, Texas – Florida State redshirt sophomore quarterback Jameis Winston was named one of 16 semifinalists for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award on Tuesday.
Winston captured the 2013 Davey O’Brien Award during his historic redshirt freshman campaign. The Bessemer, Ala., signal-caller is making a strong case to repeat as the winner this season by throwing for 2,279 yards and 16 touchdowns while leading the Seminoles to an 8-0 record.
He leads the ACC in completion percentage (67.2), passing yards per game (325.6) and total offense (331.9). Winston is 21-0 in two years as the Seminoles’ quarterback.
After clearing the first round totals, the Fan Vote at VoteOBrien.org reopens today and will remain open until noon (CT) on Sunday, Nov. 23, for the second round of balloting. Fans are invited to cast their vote for the nation’s best college quarterback as often as once daily per email address.
The Fan Vote counts as five percent during each round of the voting process, and is combined with the results from the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee, which is comprised of journalists, broadcasters, commentators and former winners.
The Davey O’Brien Foundation and the Selection Committee will release the names of the three finalists on Monday, Nov. 24. The 2014 Davey O’Brien winner will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 11.
Winston was also named one of 20 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award on Monday.
