TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s and women’s cross country both find themselves in the top 25 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Cross Country Coaches’ Poll released Tuesday afternoon.
The women’s program, which capped off an unbelievable 2009 campaign by finishing as the national runner-up, starts the 2010 season in the exact same spot as the nation’s No. 2-ranked squad.
Just like last year’s outcome, the No. 2 positioning is the best in program history.
“It certainly is exciting and an honor to be ranked so high in the preseason poll,” FSU women’s coach Karen Harvey said. “But as we have discussed many times as a team, it’s only August. We have a lot of work to do, bullets to dodge, hurdles to clear, toughness and teamwork to build.”
As for the men, head coach Bob Braman’s squad is ranked No. 24 in the country after finishing 30th in the nation last year.
The placement of both FSU squads in the top 30 means that seven total men’s and women’s teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference are on the list.
Both teams officially kick off the 2010 season this weekend as they venture to Boone, NC for the Covered Bridge Open. FSU will then be in action again as it takes part in the Across the State Relay to benefit the United Way on Sept. 11.
The next national poll will be announced on September 13.
