The Florida State women’s basketball program celebrated its 4th Annual Alumni Weekend, February 15 and 16th.
The event culminated with the playing of the always-popular Alumni basketball game.
Led by Aletha Penn’s (1994-98) game-high 12 points, the Alumni Garnet team, coached by FSU graduate assistant Brooke Lassiter with special assistance from Rosa Lee Tomberlin (1944-47), topped the Alumni White team, coached by FSU graduate assistant Autumn Sam, by a score of 43-37.
Chantelle Dishman (1989-93) led the Garnet off with a jumper just 20 seconds into the game and Lakesha Springle (1998-02) responded for the White with a layup off of a steal from Latavia Coleman (1996-00).
Then the Garnet went on an 8-0 run, topped off by a three-pointer from Liberty Taylor (1991-95) and the Garnets never looked back. Thanks to 5-for-8 shooting from three-point range in the first half, including three by Penn, the Garnet team, had a comfortable 32-21 lead at halftime. Lori Smith (1984) led the White team with five first half points and Coleman led the team with four rebounds and the White team had a 17-15 advantage on the boards at the break.
The White team opened the second half on a 6-2 run, thanks to six straight points by Lake Brown (1997-01). A Wendy Hampton-Wilson (1994-98) three-pointer pulled the White within five at 36-31, but Penn responded with yet another trey, starting a 7-2 Garnet run to make the score 43-33 with just under five minutes remaining. The White team scored the final four points of the game but fell by six points.
Brown led the White team with eight points while Carla Williams (1994-96) led the White team, who outrebounded the Garnet 35-32, with eight boards. Val Linley (1997-99) led the Garnet with eight rebounds.
