TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP)– Tanae Davis-Cain and Jacinta Monroe combined for 33 points, including 21 in the second half, as No. 21 Florida State turned back a furious Florida Gulf Coast rally for an 81-62 season-opening victory.
The Seminoles used a commanding 45-23 rebounding advantage to hold off the Eagles, who opened the season with an 88-86 upset victory of Florida.
Davis-Cain led five double-figure scorers with a game-high 18 points, including consecutive 3-pointers in the second half after Florida Gulf Coast whittled a 22-point deficit to 45-39 with 13:09 to play. Monroe contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds and started a 12-2 Seminoles run with a layup.
Florida Gulf Coast (1-1) never completely recovered after missing 11 of its first 12 shots. Kelsey Jacobson, who led the Eagles with 14 points, knocked down a trio of 3-pointers during the rally.
