The Florida State women’s basketball team learned late Sunday that its season will indeed continue as the Seminoles were one of 32 teams invited to participate in the 2003 Women’s National Invitational Tournament, marking the second time in three years that FSU women’s basketball has advanced to postseason play. FSU (16-12) will host Florida International (19-10) in first round action on Thursday, March 20th at 7 p.m. at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center.
“We’re very excited to have the opportunity to continue our season,” FSU head coach Sue Semrau said. “These young ladies have worked extremely hard all season and are very deserving of postseason play. To be able to play at home is also very excited and we are looking forward to having our great Florida State fans and the city of Tallahassee behind us.”
The WNIT appearance will mark the second time that Florida State has participated in the tournament. Back in the 1981-82 season, the Seminoles finished second, after falling to Oregon State, 76-60, in the championship game. FSU went 28-10 that year and followed the season up with its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1983.
FIU will be a familiar foe for Florida State as the two programs have met seven times with the Seminoles holding a 5-2 series advantage. Although the Golden Panthers participated in this season’s Seminole Classic back in November, the last meeting between FSU and FIU was back on December 30, 1999. The Seminoles won that battle 76-55 in Miami.
