TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State freshman Holly Johnson, who hails from Phoenix, Ariz., was named to the Women’s Basketball News Service 2002-03 Pre-Season College All-Freshman second team.
Johnson, one of four ACC newcomers to be recognized among the three teams, had an outstanding high school career. The first and only female basketball player to start all four years at Mountain Pointe High School, she was a third team Parade All-American, a McDonald’s Top 50 in the nation All-American finalist and a WBCA Top 40 in the nation honorable mention selection with placement of recognition in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.
She was also pegged Arizona’s Gatorade Girls Player of the Year in 2001-02, a two-time Street and Smith’s honorable mention All-American and a 2001-02 Women’s Basketball News Service preseason second team All-American. Johnson ranked 53rd in the nation by the All Star Girls Report and led Mountain Pointe to the 2001-02 Class 5A state championship title and to three state title games in four years.
The FSU women’s basketball team begins practice on October 12 and will open exhibition action on Tuesday, November 12th vs. Athletes in Action at 7 p.m. at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center.
