Women’s Cross Country And Women’s Golf Teams Earn Top Academic Team Peformance In 2006-07

Nov. 1, 2007

Gene Stearns, FSU Alumnus and President of Stearns, Weaver, Miller, Weissler, Alhadeff & Sitterson, P.A., was the featured speaker at Florida State’s annual Golden Torch Gala recently held to honor FSU’s outstanding scholar-athletes from the 2006-07 academic year. The black tie event is presented by the Florida State Athletics Department and Seminole Boosters, Inc. and recognizes top academic performances by both individual student-athletes and the top team performances.

For the 2006-07 season, the cross country and golf teams earned the top overall academic performance for the women’s teams while the baseball team took the honor on the men’s side.

In addition, an overall Golden Torch Award is given to the top male and female student-athletes of the year and there were ties on both sides. For the second straight year, swimming’s Katie Ronan was a winner of the women’s overall Golden Torch and cross country’s Stefanie Bechler and Rosanna Bell shared the honor with her. Once again, the men’s top scholar-athletes were both from the track and field program with repeat winner Javier Garcia-Tunon and teammate Cedric Nabe finishing tied for the top overall award.
