TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The No. 25 Florida State women’s golf team, which won the team championship at the Pinehurst Challenge last week, looks to continue its stellar play as it travels to play in the 2010 Bryan National Collegiate at the Players Course at the Bryan Park Golf and Enrichment Center in Greensboro, N.C. April 2-4, 2010. The Seminoles defeated 17 teams to win the Pinehurst Challenge at the famed Pinehurst Golf Club in their last outing. It marked the Seminoles second win of the year (they also won the Kentucky Invitational during the fall season) and was their fourth top five team finish in seven events this season. Florida State enters the Bryan National Collegiate with two events remaining before traveling to play in the ACC Championship at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, April 16-18.
THE BRYAN NATIONAL COLLEGIATE FIELD
No. 25 Florida State is joined by No. 4 Duke, No. 13 Tennessee, No. 15 Wake Forest, No. 17 Virginia, No. 20 LSU, No. 21 Ohio State, No. 22 Vanderbilt, Arkansas, College of Charleston, Louisville, North Carolina, NC State, Northwestern, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington and South Carolina in the 12th Annual Bryan National Collegiate. The Seminoles most recently participated in the event in 2007 and finished in eighth place in the event in both 2000 and 2001. Louise Wright, who earned All-ACC honors in 2001, finished in second place in the individual standings in the event in 2001 to earn the top individual finish by a Seminole in the history of the event.
SEMINOLES RANKED IN TOP 25 ENTERING BRYAN NATIONAL
Florida State is ranked 25th in this week’s national rankings by GolfWeek Magazine. The Seminoles were ranked as high as No. 8 in the nation by GolfWeek during the fall 2009 season. Florida State began the fall 2009 season unranked, spent one week at No. 8 and stayed in the top 20 during the majority of the fall and is ranked for the first time this spring.
SEMINOLES GAIN SECOND WIN OF YEAR AT PINEHURST
Florida State gained its second team victory of the season when it finished first in the team standings at the Pinehurst Challenge. The win marked the Seminoles’ second victory of the year after claiming the team title at the University of Kentucky Invitational during the fall season. The win marked the Seminoles’ fifth team championship since they won the Fall 2006 Cougar Classic and marked the first time since the 2006-07 fall and spring seasons that they had won two events in the same year. Florida State won the fall 2006 Cougar Classic and the spring 2007 Chrysler Challenge that year. The last time Florida State won three events in the same year was in 1980-81, when it won four including the A.I.A.W. National Championship.
AGNEW GAINS FIRST CAREER WIN AT PINEHURST
Senior Lacey Agnew won her first career individual championship at last week’s Pinehurst Challenge. She has now earned a career-best four top-10 finishes during the fall 2009 and spring 2010 seasons.
