TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Florida State women’s golf team travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., to play in the 2010 Tar Heel Invitational Oct. 8-10 in its second tournament of the 2010 fall season. The Seminoles opened their fall season with a sixth place finish at the Cougar Classic. The 2010 Tar Heel Invitational will be one of the most power packed tournaments of the year for Florida State as the event includes ten of the top 25 ranked teams in the Golfstat national ranking.
THE 2010 TAR HEEL INVITATIONAL FIELD
Florida State is joined by No. 3 Alabama, No. 7 Georgia, No. 8 Vanderbilt, No. 9 Virginia, No. 11 Tulane, No. 13 Duke, No. 19 Michigan State, No. 22 Denver, No. 23 North Carolina, No. 25 Wake Forest, Auburn, Florida, Louisiana State, Louisville, NC State and Texas A&M in the 2010 Tar Heel Invitational. The event will be played on the par 72, 6,285 yard course at UNC Finley Golf Course. The event is a three-round, 18 hole tournament with 18 teams in the field.
SALINAS LEADS SEMINOLES TO STRONG FINISH AT COUGAR CLASSIC
Junior Maria Salinas (Lima, Peru) was the Seminoles’ most consistent player in the season-opening Cougar Classic with two scores at even par and three scores below 75. She finished in a tie for an 11th place individual standings which marked her seventh career top 15 finish and her best since finishing in a tie for 10th place at the 2010 ACC Championships.
SALINAS CONTINUES TO PLAY WELL
Junior Maria Salinas has earned four top 20 finishes and has finished inside of the top 30 in each of her last five events including the 2010 NCAA Championship (20th place), the 2010 NCAA Central Regional (tied for 26th) and the 2010 ACC Championship (tied for 10th place). Her outstanding play has helped the Seminoles earn five top-10 team finishes including a 10th place finish at the 2010 NCAA Championship Finals in Wilmington, N.C.
NEGRON CONTINUES TO ENJOY STRONG CAREER
Sophomore Jessica Negron (Ocala, Fla.), who finished in a tie for 21st place in the individual standings at the 2010 NCAA Championship finals, got off to a strong start to begin the fall 2010 season with a tied for 21st place in the Cougar Classic. She has now earned nine top 25 finishes in the first 13 events of her Seminole career. Negron earned her career best finish at the spring 2010 Gator Invitational as she finished in a tie for third place in leading Florida State to a second place finish in the team standings.
NEW IN THE LINE UP FOR TAR HEEL INVIATIONAL
Junior Whitney Wenglasz (Oldsmar, Fla.) rejoins the Seminoles’ starting line-up for this week’s Tar Heel Invitational. It marks her first appearance for the junior since the spring of 2009 when she was one of Florida State’s top players in the Gator Invitational. She shot a 74 and a 70 in the first two rounds of the event and was tied for the lead in the individual standings going into the last day of the tournament.
SEMINOLES TO THE WORLD AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Florida State’s Maria Salinas and Macarena Silva will represent Florida State and their countries in the 2010 Women’s World Amateur Team Championship. The Argentine Golf Association will host the biannual competition that is set to take place at the Olivos Buenos Aires Golf Clubs in Argentina Oct. 20-23, 2010. Silva, Florida State’s leading golfer of the 2009-2010 season, represented Chile in the 2008 championship. Silva helped Chile to a 34th place finish as the team’s top player. Salinas will play her first World Championship and it will also be Peru’s first appearance since 2004. Silva and Salinas will kick off the first round of the 2010 Women’s World Amateur Team Championship on Wed., Oct. 20th at the Olivos and the Buenos Aires Golf Clubs.
