HANAHAN, S.C. (seminoles.com) – Senior All-American Matilda Castren shot a 71 in the final round and finished in a tie for 11th in the individual standings, and the No. 2 ranked Seminole women’s golf team finished in fourth place in the team standings as play in the 14th Annual Cougar Fall Classic at the Yeamans Hall Club Came to a close. It marked the 20th time in Castren’s 34-tournament career as a Seminole that she finished as Florida State’s leader in an event.
Florida State finished the three-round event with a 4-under par team score of 284. It marked the sixth consecutive round this fall (all three rounds in the Schooner Fall Classic and all three in Cougar Fall Classic) that the Seminoles have finished with a below par team score. The Seminoles are a total of 31 strokes under par with three of their five players averaging below par scores for the first two events of the season.
North Carolina won the team title shooting a three-round and new tournament-low 838 (-26). It marked the Tar Heels’ second all-time Cougar Classic title. North Carolina’s Kelly Whaley claimed individual medalist honors shooting 11-under par for the tournament, while South Carolina’s Katelyn Dambaugh was runner-up shooting 10-under.
“We got better each round in this tournament and finished under par for the second straight event which I am very proud of,” said head coach Amy Bond. “We had a great finish today which jumped us up to fourth place in the individual standings. We didn’t play our best golf this week but we took what the course gave us and earned a top-four finish.”
Castren (Espoo, Finland) completed her second of three under par rounds in the event as she played nearly flawless golf throughout the round. She carded two birdies and 17 holes scored at par or better to finish at 1-under par. She played only one hole over par and was never above par over the course of her 18 holes. Castren was one stroke under par on her first 11 holes and one stroke under par on her final six holes.
Castren finished in a tie for 11th place in the individual standings as she earned the 23rd top 20 finish of her career. She has now finished in the top 12 in both of the Seminoles’ fall events. Castren finished with a team-high tying 10 birdies in the 54 holes played during the tournament.
“It was a battle today but I fought hard to finish my round under par,” said Castren. “I’m so proud of my teammates for finishing well because they helped us climb up the leader board to fourth place. We did not have our best games this week but we finished well which will give us momentum going into next weekend at Texas State.”
Junior Morgane Metraux (Lausanne, Switzerland) finished in a tie for 19th place in the individual standings with a 1-under par total of 215. She carded a 74 in the final round and finished the event with two of three rounds scored below par. Morgane Metraux has finished under par in both of the Seminoles’ fall events and is a total of five strokes below par for the season.
Senior Lydia Gumm (Radcliff, Ky.) finished in a tie for 22nd place in the individual standings. She finished with a 1-under par 71 in the third round and an even par 216 total for the tournament. Gumm has finished both of Florida State’s early season events at par or better and is seven strokes under par for the season. She is at even par in her last three collegiate events including the 2016 NCAA Championship Finals (+7 over par), the fall 2016 season-opening Schooner Fall Classic (-7 under par) and the Cougar Fall Classic (even par).
Gumm earned the shot of the day for the Seminoles as she carded an eagle on hole No. 15 for the second consecutive day. She has now carded three eagles as a Seminole with two coming in the 2016 Cougar Fall Classic.
“I was a good hole for me,” said Gumm. “Today I hit a good drive, hit a hybrid 3 to about 12 feet and made the putt.”
Junior Kim Metraux (Lausanne, Switzerland) played the best round of the day for the Seminoles as she carded a 2-under par score of 70. She carded five birdies and 15 holes scored at par or better to finish with a 223 total. She has now carded three of her six rounds in the first two events of the fall season at par or better.
Freshman Amanda Doherty (Atlanta, Ga) played the best golf of her young Seminole career in the last two days. She finished the event with an even par 72 in the third round and a 2-under par total of 142 over her final 36 holes. Doherty finished with a career best 1-over par score of 217 and in a tied for 27th place in the individual standings. She improved her score by 12 strokes and her individual placement by 25 spots in the standings from the Schooner Fall Classic to the Cougar Fall Classic.
