MESA, Arizona (seminoles.com) – The No. 2 Florida State women’s golf team finished in third place in the team standings, and senior Matilda Castren finished in fifth place in the individual standings as play in the Clover Cup at the Longbow Golf Club came to a close. The Seminoles earned their seventh top three team finish in eight events this year while Castren extended her school records with her 23rdcareer top-10 finish and her 15th career top-five finish.
No. 5 ranked Arizona State finished in first place in the team standings with a 26-under par team score of 838. The Sun Devils finished 13 strokes ahead of second-placed Oklahoma and 15 strokes ahead of third-placed Florida State. The Seminoles with an under par team score of 853 – the sixth time this season they have finished with an under par team in their eight events. Florida State is a cumulative total of 59 strokes under par in their last three events with two team victories. Julienne Soo of Oklahoma led, or was tied for the individual lead, in each of the three rounds in winning the championship. She carded scores of 66-66-71 for a three round total of 203 to gain a seven stroke victory over Linnea Strom of Arizona State.
Florida State, which moved into the No. 2 national ranking the day before the event began, finished ahead of three teams ranked in the top nation’s 50 (No. 24 TCU and No. 44 Kentucky and No. 49 Houston) in the team standings. Morgane Metraux, who began play in the event ranked as the No. 5 individual in the nation, carded two of three scores under par and finished with an under par tournament score for the third consecutive event and for the seventh time this season.
“We learned a lot about ourselves at this event,” said head coach Amy Bond. “Sometimes the tournaments in which we don’t play our best golf are the tournaments we learn the most about ourselves. We are going to take everything we learned about ourselves this week, bring it back home and prepare for our final event of the regular season at Clemson.”
Florida State finished as the only team in the event with four players in the top 10 of the individual standings – Castren (fifth), Morgane Metraux (tied for sixth), Kim Metraux (tied for 10th) and Lydia Gumm (tied for 10th).
Castren (Espoo, Finland) carded scores of 70-69-72 for a 5-under par total of 211. She carded three birdies and 15 holes scored at par or better in the third and final round to earn her second under par score of the spring season and her sixth sub-par score of her senior season. Castren is averaging a career-low 70.83 strokes in 22 rounds during eight tournaments as a senior.
Castren’s fifth place individual is her third of the spring season and fifth top-five finish of the year. She won the individual championship at the Jim West Challenge during the fall season.
“I didn’t play as well as I wanted to play today,” said Castren. “I hit the ball well but the putts did not fall as they did during the first two days of the tournament. I am happy to finish in fifth place in the individual standings. I look at my game moving forward one event as a time.”
Morgane Metraux (Lausanne, Switzerland) earned her third consecutive top six finish – a run that includes two individual championships and the seventh top-five individual finish of her career. Metraux was very consistent in the third round with two birdies and 15 holes played at par or better. She is an average of over nine strokes under par for the last three events with an average tournament score of 206.7 and an average individual placing of 2.3.
Junior Kim Metraux (Lausanne, Switzerland) and senior Lydia Gumm (Radcliff, Ky.) finished tied for 10th in the individual standings with identical scores of 1-under par 215. Both Metraux and Gumm finished with one round scored under par in this event. For Metraux the placing was her 10th top-10 finish of her Seminole career. Gumm now has 11 top 10 career finishes including four in her last five events.
Florida State plays its final regular season event of the year as it travels to play at the Clemson Invitational March 31-April 2. The ACC Championship, in Pawleys Island, S.C., is set for April 13-15.
