GAINESVILLE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
The Florida State women’s golf team, with both senior Maria Salinas and freshman Laure Castelain in the top 10 of the individual standings, are in fourth place in the team standings with one round remaining to be played at the Lady Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida. The Seminoles are one of only three teams in the 17 team field with two players in the top 10 of the individual standings and will begin play on Sunday within six strokes of Alabama and Florida who share the lead after two rounds.
No. 2 Alabama and No. 23 Florida are the co-leaders with identical two round scores of 577. The Crimson Tide maintained its position atop the team leaderboard in the second round while the homestanding Gators moved into a tie for first after sitting in a tie for sixth place after the first round. Georgia is in third place – five strokes behind the lead – and Florida State is in fourth place – six strokes out of first place. Christina Miller of USF shot a second round score of 69 and holds a two stroke lead ahead of Emilie Burger of Georgia with a total of 136.
Salinas (Lima, Peru) held her position within the top five of the individual standings as she carded a two over par 72 in the second round and is in fourth place in the individual standings. She carded a two under par 68 in the first round and has a total of 140 heading into the third round. Salinas is only four strokes behind the lead as she plays for the first individual championship of her career.
Salinas played 15 holes at par or better with one birdie and played even par golf over the final 10 holes of the round. She was even par on her first six and three of her final four holes of the round. Salinas has totaled five birdies in the first two rounds and has an ever par score of 140 with 18 holes left remaining to be played.
Castelain (Bordeaux, France) moved into a tie for eighth place in the individual standings as she carded a two over par 72 in the second round for a two round total of 143. She played her round at par or better on 13 of her 18 holes with two birdies. Castelain maintained her individual status in the top 10 – she was in a tie for 10th in the individual standings after two rounds and is in a tie for eighth with one round to play.
Junior Jessica Negron (Ocala, Fla.) enjoyed the Seminoles’ best single round improvement as she carded a three over par score of 73 in the second round after carding a 79 in the first round. She improved her scored by a team leading six strokes and her individual placement by 35 places. Negron carded more birdies in the second round as compared to the first (three to two), fewer bogeys (six to seven) and no double bogeys (as compared to two in the second round).
Florida State will tee off beginning at 9:00 a.m. and will play with Alabama and Baylor.
