TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The No. 22 ranked Florida State women’s golf team, which finished in 10th place at the 2010 NCAA Division I Championship, opens its 2010-11 fall season as it participates in the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Golf Course in Hanahan, S.C., Sept. 12-14, 2010. The Seminoles have fared very well in this event recently with in winning the team championship in 2006, finishing in second place in 2009 and in fifth place in 2008. Senior co-captain Lacey Agnew, who graduated from Florida State in 2010, finished in second place in the individual standings at the 2009 Cougar Classic as did four-time Seminole All-American Caroline Westrup in 2006.
THE 2010 COUGAR CLASSIC FIELD
No. 22 Florida State is joined by No. 19 Florida, No. 25 South Carolina, No. 32 North Carolina, Charleston Southern, College of Charleston, Furman, Kentucky, Maryland, Miami (Fla.), Minnesota, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, UNC Greensboro, NC State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Richmond, South Florida, UCF and Wisconsin in the 2010 Cougar Classic. The event will be played on the par 72, 6,210 yard course at Yeamans Hall Golf Club. The event is a three-round, 18-hole tournament with 21 teams in the field.
BOND NAMED SEMINOLES’ HEAD COACH
Amy Bond, most recently the head coach at Princeton University where she led the Tigers to eight tournament championships in four years, was named the head women’s golf coach at Florida State on June 25, 2010. Bond was a four year letterwinner (1996-99) and assistant coach for the Seminoles (2003-06) who now returns home to lead the program into a new era of success on the golf course. She is only the fifth coach in the history of the program.
FLORIDA STATE WOMEN’S GOLF TEAM EARNS PERFECT APR
The Florida State women’s golf team, which finished in 10th place in the 2010 NCAA Division I Championship, was recognized by the NCAA with a perfect APR (Academic Progress Rate) for the period 2006-2009. The Department of Athletics at Florida State is one of nine ACC schools and the only Division I school in the state of Florida to have multiple varsity teams recognized publicly by the NCAA for having a perfect four-year average on the APR. The Seminole women’s golf team was honored along with the Seminole men’s golf team.
NEGRON AND THOMPSON PLAY IN 2010 US WOMEN’S AM
Sophomore Jessica Negron and junior Hannah Thomson, two members of the nationally ranked Florida State women’s golf team, played in the 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship August 9-15 at the Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. Negron advanced to the match play portion of the 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship as she finished among the top 64 golfers in the stroke play portion of the event with a two-day score of 149. Thompson played well during the stroke play portion of the event but did not advance into match play.
