TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
The Florida State women’s golf team, which finished in fifth place at the season opening Mo Morial Tournament in September, travels to the University of Oklahoma to play in the 33rd annual Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the Jimmy Austin Golf Club in Norman, Okla., Oct. 16-18. It marks the first time the Seminoles will play in the event which is named for Berning who played on the LPGA Tour from 1964 through 1997 and won 11 tour events during her career. She won four major titles including three U.S. Women’s Open Championships (1968, 1972 and 1973). Following their participation in the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic, the Seminoles will close out their fall season at the Landfall Tradition at Wilmington, N.C. Oct. 28-30.
THE SUSIE MAXWELL BERNING CLASSIC FIELD
No. 31 Florida State is joined by No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 23 Oklahoma, No. 28 Texas Tech, Coastal Carolina, Florida International, Kansas, Kansas State, Kennesaw State, Middle Tennessee, Oral Roberts, Redlands Community College, Texas State, Michigan, New Mexico, Texas at San Antonio and Wisconsin in the 33rd Annual Susie Maxwell Berning Classic. The event is played at the Par 72, 6,327 yard course at the Jimmy Austin OU Golf Club which was built in 1951 and will play host to a 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s regional championship and a 2012 NCAA Division I Women’s regional championship. The club also played host to the 2010 Big 12 Women’s Championship tournament.
JANSSON LEADS SEMINOLES IN SEASON OPENER
Junior Malin Jansson, who transferred from Western Carolina to Florida State this fall, led Florida State in her first tournament as a Seminole. She finished in 21st place in the individual standings with a three-round total of 230 to help her new team to a fifth place team finish at the Mo Morial Tournament at the Traditions Course at Texas A&M University. She carded a 74 in the final round and displayed marked improvement in each of her rounds during the event. Jansson averaged 76.67 strokes in three rounds during the Mo Morial Classic as she earned her 13th career top 25 finish.
SEMINOLE NEWCOMERS STEPPING UP EARLY
Second-year head coach Amy Bond has utilized at least two newcomers in the Seminoles’ starting line-up in the first two tournaments of the fall season. Two new Seminoles – Malin Jansson and Carlton Kuhlo – helped lead Florida State to a fifth place finish at the Mo Morial Tournament to open the season. Bond will count on three newcomers – Laure Castelain, Jansson and Alex Milan — at this week’s Susie Berning Maxwell Classic. Kuhlo, who finished in 29th place in the individual standings at the Mo Morial, Castelain and Milan were the three freshmen who made up Florida State’s nationally ranked recruiting class in 2010.
THOMSON CONTINUES TO LEAD SEMINOLES
Senior co-captain Hannah Thomson will lead the Seminoles into the Susie Berning Maxwell Classic this week – marking the 28th tournament appearance of her Florida State career. Thomson will make her 18th consecutive appearance for the Seminoles at the Susie Berning Maxwell Classic; she has played in every Florida State event since the Pinehurst Challenge in March of 2010. Thomson’s streak of playing in 18 consecutive tournaments as a Seminole is second only to teammate Jessica Negron who will play in her 23rd consecutive tournament this week.
SALINAS FINISHES SECOND AT 2011 SOUTH AMERICAN AMATEUR
Senior Maria Salinas finished in second place at the South America Women’s Amateur Golf Championship in August. Salinas lost the individual championship by one stroke to Manuela Carbajo after spending the first three rounds in first place by herself or tied for the lead with Carbajo.
