TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State’s April Traylor scored a
game-high 28 points, but the Seminoles fell 78-69 to
Tennessee-Chattanooga this evening in first round action of the
Tallahassee Democrat Seminole Classic. The loss puts FSU at 1-2 while
UTC improves to 4-0.
Florida State had a slim 29-27 lead at the halftime break. Both
teams basically traded baskets for the first five minutes of the game.
FSU broke away to take a 13-8 lead at the 14:26 mark but UT-Chattanooga
scored the next six straight to take a one-point advantage. The Tribe
regained the lead on two free throws by Traylor and built a lead of nine
points at 29-20. The Lady Mocs scored the half’s final seven points and
trailed by just two points at the break.
The advantage again went back and forth for the first 10 minutes
of the second half. Trailing by one point at 45-44 at the 10:49 mark,
UT-Chattanooga outscored FSU 9-1 over the next three minutes to go up
by seven at 53-46. The Lady Mocs would not trail again. FSU came back
to tie the game at 69-69 with 1:49 to play, but the Lady Mocs answered,
as they did all night, with one of their six treys for the night. UTC
finished the game with nine unanswered points.
“We just didn’t hit our shots,” FSU Head Coach Sue Semrau said.
“We weren’t focused enough to hit them. We certainly got a huge effort
from April (Traylor) tonight. She deserved to win it on her own, but
you can’t win it on your own. It needs to be a team effort and we
didn’t get that tonight. Chattanooga is a good basketball team. They
are very much improved and they came ready to play. Our inexperience is
showing in a big way.”
FSU lone senior Latavia Coleman added 16 points and a team-high
nine rebounds. Florida State outrebounded UTC, 45-34, but shot just 34
percent to the Lady Mocs’ 48 percent. For UTC, four players scored in
double figures, led by Damita Bullock’s 18 points. Katarika Banks had
nine rebounds off of the bench to lead the team.
Xavier’s Taru Tuukkanen scored a game-high 32 points and grabbed
a game-high 13 rebounds to lead the Musketeers, 3-0, to a
come-from-behind 80-72 win over Oakland, 2-2, in the first game of the
Tallahassee Democrat Seminole Classic. Oakland pulled ahead by as many
as nine points in the first half, thanks to 5-of-11 shooting from three
point land, and went into the locker room leading, 48-41. In the second
half, Xavier regained the lead for good at 53-52 at the 17:38 mark and
outscored the Golden Grizzlies 12-4 to take a 65-56 advantage with just
under 10 minutes to play. Oakland didn’t stop fighting and forced two
ties at 70-70 and 72-72 before Xavier scored the game’s final eight
points. XU’s Kim Hotz and Nicole Levandusky each added 16 points. For
Oakland, Beth Zeone led the way with 18 points while Jamie Ahlgren had
17 and Katie Wolfe and Sarah Judd added 13 and 10, respectively.
Florida State will face Oakland at 6 p.m. in the tournament’s
consolation game while UT-Chattanooga and Xavier will square off for the
Classic title at 8 p.m.
