WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Emon McMillian scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Wake Forest defeated visiting Florida State, 80-68, at Joel Coliseum on Monday night. The win snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Demon Deacons, who improved to 7-17 overall and 3-11 in the ACC. Florida State dropped its ninth straight contest to fall to 6-18 overall and 1-13 in the conference.
Wake Forest led by as many as eight points in the first half and held a 36-32 halftime advantage, but Florida State rallied midway through the second period to take the lead. The Seminoles tied the game 56-56 on an Angela Sutton layup with 8:51 to go, then ran off five more points to take a their biggest lead at 61-56. The Deacons responded with a 24-7 run over the game’s final 7:20, however, to record their first win since January 4th. FSU forced 28 Wake Forest turnovers, converting them into 28 points, but the Deacons won the game on the boards, outrebounding the Seminoles by a commanding 49-22 margin.
WFU sophomore guard Janae Whiteside recorded a career-high 16 points, hitting five three-pointers, and also made four steals. Senior point guard Heidi Coleman added 13 points for WFU. For Florida State, freshman guard April Traylor scored 16 points, while Sutton added 13 and sophomore forward Brooke Wyckoff recorded 11 points and a team-high six rebounds.
