Women’s Soccer Finishes Season With a Win

November 1, 1998

TALLAHASSEE, FL — On a day honoring the eight seniors, three of them
scored goals as the Seminoles defeated Auburn this afternoon 6-1 at the
site of the Seminole Soccer Complex. FSU finished the regular season 7-10-3
as the Tigers drop to 5-12-0.

“This is a great ending for a group of first class ladies,” Head Coach
Heather Kerby-Nelson said. “These seniors did an excellent job leading the
team this afternoon. I’m very proud of them.”

Lauren Lynch had the first goal for the seniors as she took a ball
through the defense for a 15 yard strike in the 28th minute. Rachael Watkin
headed a ball in the back of the net off a corner kick from Angela
Bonaffino in the 43rd minute to give the Seminoles a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Maren Vik Edvardsen added another goal off a corner kick from April Murphy
to start the second half before Amie Bradley scored for Auburn off a
penalty kick. The Seminoles then went on a scoring spree as they scored
three goals in three minutes. Seniors Jill Ford and Alex Osorio scored off
assists from Sally Shelgren and Marte Vik Edvardsen scored the final goal
for the Seminoles off another assist from Shelgren. Shelgren’s three
assists tied the record for most assists in a game and in the second half.

The Seminoles head to Orlando on Wednesday for the Atlantic Coast
Conference Tournament, which will be held at the Disney Wide World of
Sports Complex November 5-8. This is the first time in FSU history the
Seminoles will not play North Carolina in the first round.

“I feel very confident going into the tournament,” Kerby-Nelson said.
“We’re healthy, playing great defense and scoring the goals when we need
them. We have a better chance his year to advance.”
