Women’s Soccer Opens Season against Gators

The Florida State soccer team will take on the Florida Gators in the season opener on Friday, August 27 at 7:00pm in Gainesville. The match will be televised LIVE on the Sunshine Network. The Seminoles will then return home to take on the University of Miami on Sunday, August 29 at 2pm at the Seminole Soccer Complex.

The Seminoles return 13 veterans from the 1998 squad, including leading scorer Maren Vik Edvardsen and top defensive player Rachael Watkin. This will also be the first season for head coach Patrick Baker, assistant coaches Lauren Cyran and Darren Ambrose and graduate assistant Natalie Rich.

The Florida State squad welcomes 13 newcomers to the team this season, including freshman forward Cindy Schofield, who set the Florida high school record for most goals in a career with 238 and was second in the nation in the category. Also joining the Seminoles are Gina Iacovella, a senior midfielder who transferred from the University of South Carolina, and junior goalkeeper Sarah Crawford who transferred from Georgia State University.

Who To Watch in 1999

Veterans

  • Maren Vik Edvardsen returns after her record setting freshman year. The sophomore from Oslo, Norway led the team in goals (8) and points (18) and was among the nation’s best with her four goals against Furman.
  • Rachael Watkin was the only Seminole to start in all 21 matches last season. The junior from Boca Raton, Fla.., led the defense, adding her game-winning goal against Auburn.
  • April Murphy played in all 21 matches in 1998 as a reserve. The junior from Tulsa Okla.,was third last year in goals with four, including the game-winning goal against Stetson.

New Seminoles

  • Gina Iacovella (Midfielder) comes to FSU after spending three years at South Carolina. The senior from Prospect, Conn., was a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and led the squad to the first NCAA appearance ever for the Gamecocks.
  • Cindy Schofield (Forward) joins the Seminoles as the top career goal scorer in Florida high school history. The freshman from Lakeland, F.L., also holds the second spot in the country in the same catagory and will contribute to the attacking offense.
  • Courtney Asbra (Defender) joins the Seminole squad from Arlington, Texas. Asbra, who played for the Texas Olympic Development Team from 1995-99, will compete for an outside back position. She possesses the pace, focus and skill to be an excellent player at the collegiate level.


Where To Park

Parking for the media and public will be available in the lots located behind Mike Long Track, next to the tennis center, the metered lot across from the Leach Student Center, the Dick Howser Baseball stadium lot and the grass area located on Stadium drive on the side of the soccer field. PARKING IS NOT PERMITTED ON THE CONNECTOR ROAD. YOU WILL BE TOWED. NOTE: THE LOT LOCATED BEHIND THE SOFTBALL FIELD IS NOT OPEN! THEY ARE STILL PAVING THIS LOT SO DO NOT TRY AND PARK THERE. Once they open this lot, parking will be available there as well.


Entering The Complex

All media and public must enter the complex from the connector road. DO NOT ENTER FROM THE GATE LOCATED ON THE SOFTBALL SIDE OF THE COMPLEX. This entrance is for players and staff ONLY.


The Seminole Soccer Complex


The 1999 season marks the first season for the Seminoles in the new facility. The Seminole Soccer Complex, which is located on Stadium Drive, houses a new state-of-the-art facility including a press box, concession building and a team building which includes team and visiting lockerrooms, a spacious work room, training and equipment rooms and coaches offices which overlook the field. The complex also houses the Lady Seminole Softball team.

Highlights From The 1998 Season

  • Freshman Maren Vik Edvardsen broke the Individual Game Records for FSU in Most Points (8) and Most Goals (4) and tied the record for Most 1st Half and 2nd Half Goals (2 apiece). Her four goals put her among the NCAA’s best for goals scored in a single game.
  • FSU had its best showing against Florida as they held the Gators to one goal until the final minutes of the game. The 2-0 loss was the best performance ever for FSU against Florida and one of the best in the country against the Gators in 1998.
  • FSU ended a 14-game losing streak in the ACC when they defeated #15 Maryland 3-2 in overtime in College Park. This was the first ACC win for the Seminoles sonce the 4-2 win over NC State in 1996.
  • Senior Jill Ford was tabbed ACC Player of the Week for the week of October 19th after she teallied two goals against Maryland and one against Stetson.
  • The Seminoles finished the season with a 6-1 victory over Auburn with three seniors scoring goals. Jill Ford, Alex Osorio and Lauren Lynch each tallied a goal against the Tigers in their final game at the Seminole Soccer Complex.
  • Goalkeeper Jamie Gurtov started 20 of the 21 games in 1998 and led the ACC in saves with 108.
  • Sally Shelgren tied the FSU record for assists in a single game with her three against Auburn. This also placed her in the Individual Single Game Highs in the ACC Statistics.
  • For the first time in FSU history, the Seminoles did not take on the UNC Tar Heels in the first round of the ACC tournament and did not finish last in the conference standings.
