ATLANTA, Ga. – The 19th-ranked, and third-seeded Florida State women’s tennis team defeated the sixth-seeded Virginia Cavaliers today, 5-1, to advance to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament.
The Lady Seminoles won without out having to play the doubles portion of the match by winning five out of six singles matches to clinch the victory. All five winners for FSU went the distance against their opponents. Freshman Alida Gallovits at No. 1 and sophomore Nanette Duxin at No. 2 each rallied to win after losing the first set. Gallovits clinched the match for the Seminoles, who were up 4-1 when she ended the Cavaliers hopes by defeating Paige Boiko, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Freshman Marina Raic won her 30th match of the year against UVA’s Amy O’Donnell, the second time this season Raic has defeated O’Donnell. FSU’s Ali Weber, a 1999 ACC Flight Champion at No. 6 singles, won in three sets to improve her record to 7-2 this season at No. 6.
Florida State will await the winner of (2) Wake Forest and (7) Clemson. In the regular season, Wake Forest defeated Clemson 7-2 and the Lady Seminoles dropped a tight match to the Demon Deacons, 5-4, in Tallahassee. Regardless of the opponent, Florida State will take the courts on Saturday morning at 11am.
