TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State’s women’s tennis continued competition at the 2002 Gator Fall Classic. The duo of Amberly Tantee and Gheorghe were the only Lady Seminoles to advance as they will play in the semifinals of the Flight A doubles on Sunday. Gheorghe won her Flight B singles quarterfinal match, but lost to Sihem Bennacer of Miami in the semifinals. Mihaela Moldovan and Anca Dumitrescu also fell in the Flight A singles quarterfinals.
In Flight A singles, Dumitrescu’s run came short as Florida’s Jennifer Magley took the quarterfinal match 6-3, 6-2. Miami’s Mari Toro got the better of FSU newcomer Moldovan in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 in the same draw.
Brooke Cordell defeated Tania Rivera of Florida Atlantic (6-2, 3-6, 7-5) in the consolation quarterfinals of Flight A singles. Christina Denny advanced in the quarterfinals of the Flight A Singles Main Back Draw, winning 6-3, retired over Central Florida’s Julie Pecastaing. Denny later fell in the semifinals (2-6, 5-7) to Alena Dvorakova of Florida Atlantic.
In the Flight B singles Gheorghe lost to Miami’s Sihem Bennacer 4-6, 3-6. Gheorghe advanced by winning her quarterfinal match (6-1, 6-1) over Jessica Burrow of Florida Atlantic. Meredith Fish didn’t fare as well as she dropped her singles Flight B quarterfinal match to Florida Atlantic’s Maria Aguirre-Gomez 1-6, 6-1, 1-6.
In doubles, Tantee and Gheorghe came away with an 8-5 quarterfinal win over Stevens and Toro of Miami. The duo will compete in the Flight A doubles semifinals on Sunday. Beth Lawrence and Natalie Tirapelli fell (8-1) to Magley and Scaringe of Florida in the quarterfinals of Flight A doubles.
Competition will conclude at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville on Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. Lawrence and Tirapelli will begin their semifinal doubles match when the singles matches are finished.
