Women’s Tennis Completes Day One Of Its South Regional

MOBILE, ALA.,– Florida State University women’s tennis team
completed day one of tournament play at the ITA South Regional Championships
being held on the campus of the University of South Alabama.

In the flight A singles division the Lady Seminoles entered Alida
Gallovits, Christina Denny and Jessica Balbuena. Seminole and No. 4 seed
Gallovits excelled early in tournament competition advancing to the round of
16 play. In first round play Gallovits defeated Claudia Oliveira in straight
sets 6-3, 6-0. In round of 32 play Gallovits then defeated Alesya Ignatieva
6-2, 6-2. Saturday morning Gallovits is set to play Lindsey Dawaf, the No.
13 seed. Freshman Denny started off strong in tournament play defeating
Isabella King 6-3, 5-7, 6-1. In round of 32 play Denny fell to the No. 10.
seed Martina Ondrejkova 2-6, 4-6. Balbuena fell in tournament play in the
round of 64 when she faced the No. 6 seed Silvia Sosnarova. Balbuena fought
with everything she had against the seeded Sosnarova coming up just short
2-6, 6-3, 6-3. In the flight A singles consolation round Balbuena defeated
Jackie Prew in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. In second round play Balbuena
received a Bye and will face an unknown opponent Satu
rday morning in round three of the singles flight A consolation round.

In the singles flight B division, freshman Beth Lawrence fell in the
round of 64 to Stefanie Leung 6-1, 6-1. Lawrence then went on to receive a
first round Bye in the consolation round. Lawrence will face an unknown
opponent Saturday morning in the second round of tournament action.

In flight A doubles the Lady Seminoles entered the tandem of Gallovits
and Balbuena. The Seminole tandem faced and defeated Analia Longoi and
Lindsey Wyeth 8-2. Saturday afternoon Gallovits and Balbuena will face the
No. 1 seed in flight A doubles play, Whitney Laiho and Jessica Lehnhoff in
the round of 16 action.
