PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – On the first day of qualifying at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship, the Florida State women’s tennis team came away with some big wins highlighted by junior Carla Touly and sophomore Emmanuelle Salas.
Touly and Salas started the day with a big ranked doubles win over No. 36 Jackie Carr and Tatum rice of Arkansas. The 55th ranked French duo dominated the Razorbacks winning 8-3 and advancing to the round of 16. They need two more doubles wins to advance to the main draw.
Senior Ariana Rahmanparast and junior Nandini Das lost their first-round match 8-3 to Cal’s 33rd ranked doubles pair of Rosenquist and Hauger. Senior Ana Oparenovic and sophomore Petra Hule lost to Michigan’s 46th ranked duo of Fahey and Lommer 8-7(4).
The Seminoles earned some more big wins in singles play as Salas went 2-0 and Oparenovic went 1-1. Salas got her day started by winning 6-2, 7-6(5) over Texas’s Tijana Spasojevic, setting her up with a match against the two seed and No. 25 Vanessa Wong of Washington. Salas took the battle to Wong, defeating her in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-4.
Oparenovic opened her day with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Alexandra Disareva of Utah State before losing her second-round match to No, 70 Andie Daniell of Alabama 6-4, 6-2.
Salas will need one more win on Wednesday to advance to the singles main draw.
