Women’s Tennis Falls in NCAA Regional Action

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The 19th-ranked Florida State women’s tennis concluded its season with a 5-4 loss to the 38th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes in the first round of NCAA Regional action this afternoon at the Courtney Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. The Lady Seminoles finish the season with a 21-7 record while Iowa improves to 17-8.


Florida State used wins at Nos. 1, 4, 5 and 6 singles to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Iowa’s Natalya Dawaf broke serve at 5-4 in the third set for the Hawkeyes first point after losing nine match points to FSU’s Marina Raic. Iowa took all three doubles matches, but had to come from behind to do it. At No. 1 doubles, FSU’s Nanette Duxin and Alida Gallovits took a 7-5 lead but lost the final four games of the pro set to Iowa’s Toni Neykova and Shera Wiegler which tied the match at 4-4. The deciding match at No. 3 doubles was sent into a tiebreaker and Iowa jumped out to a 6-0 lead before holding onto win the tiebreaker 7-4.


The hard-fought loss for the Lady Seminoles included four matches that were taken to the limit. The two losses in singles were taken to a third set, and two of the losses in doubles needed ninth games to decide them.


“I think we competed well today, ” said FSU head coach Lise Gregory. “I knew our singles matches were important. I think the Wake Forest loss in the ACC Tournament was still in our minds. Hopefully, our young team can learn from this loss.”


Florida State’s second winningest season in school history ends after its fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. Next year’s squad returns all of this season’s starters, losing just one senior off its roster. Iowa advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament to face No. 12 Notre Dame.
