TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team suffered a tough loss to Duke University Thursday afternoon by a score of 6-1, after having to reschedule the match due to severe weather Wednesday evening. With the loss, Florida State falls to 10-12 overall and 1-5 in the ACC. Duke University came into the match ranked 4th nationally with five players represented in the Omni Hotels College Tennis Individual Rankings.
The doubles portion of the match featured a major highlight for the Lady Seminoles as senior Jessica Balbuena and freshman Lauren Walker knocked off Hilary Adams and Kelly McCain at the no.1 double position, 9-7. Unfortunately, Duke won the other two double matches winning the first team point before entering the singles competition.
Later in singles play, Duke captured five out of six matches, each in straight sets. However, at no. 3 singles, Christina Denny battled it out with 26th ranked Julie DeRoo for two hours and fifteen minutes before winning 6-4 in the third set to take the match. Also, Anca Dumitrescu made a substantial comeback against Kelly McCain, ranked 3rd nationally, before losing 6-4 in the second set.
The Seminoles will close out their regular season with two ACC matches this weekend against Georgia Tech and Clemson.
