TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team almost pulled off another upset over a Top 20 team. The 20th-ranked Seminoles fell to the 17th-ranked Demon Deacons by just one point at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on Friday, ending their eight-match winning streak.
It was only the fourth loss of the season for the Seminoles, who are now 16-4. Of the Noles four losses, only one of them have come against a team not ranked in the Top 20, and that was the 25th-ranked Miami Hurricanes.
The Demon Deacons handed FSU their first loss in three ACC matches this season. The Seminoles got wins from freshman Marina Raic, and juniors Ali Weber and Kia Asberg. Asberg, along with Raic, kept alive their winning streaks. Each of them, has now won 14 straight singles matches. Asberg is only one win away from a 20-win season, as she stands 19-1 going into Sunday’s match against N.C. State. Raic is right behind Asberg, with a record of 18-2. Raic is undefeated in nine matches at No.3 singles this season, while Asberg is 6-0 at No.5 singles for Florida State.
Wake Forest’s No.1 player, and 9th-ranked player in the country, Mariel Verban got things started for the Demon Deacons with a win over FSU’s Alida Gallovits, 6-3, 6-0. Verban’s record moves to 8-5 at No.1, while Gallovits’ falls to 10-9. FSU sophomore Nanette Duxin also drew a highly ranked player as she squared off against Wake Forest’s Janet Bergman, a freshman who is already ranked among the Top 50 in the country at #43. Bergman came away with the victory 6-3, 6-4.
As the ladies headed into doubles play, the match was all tied up at three apiece . In doubles, the Demon Deacons took two of three matches to earn the victory over the Seminoles. FSU’s only doubles win came at No.2, where Raic and Jessica Balbuena bounced Wake Forest’s Annemarie Milton and Lea Miller, 8-3, for their third straight doubles victory.
FSU returns to the courts on Sunday to face North Carolina State at noon, in Tallahassee.
