Women’s Tennis Has Strong Showing on Day One of Regionals

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Florida State women’s tennis team has a strong showing on day one of the ITA Southeast Regional. They combined to go 3-1 in doubles and 9-5 in singles.

After earning the top three seeds in doubles, the Seminoles lived up to their seeding and finished day one of the ITA Southeast Regional with a 3-1 doubles record. Senior Ariana Rahmanparast and junior Nandini Das got things started for the Noles with an 8-4 win over Mercer. They will take on seventh seed Jones/Said of Georgia Tech tomorrow.

The One seed, senior Ana Oparenovic, and sophomore Petra Hule captured an 8-6 win over UCF and will take on Perez-Somarriba/Ito of Miami tomorrow.

Three seed, senior Julia Mikulski and junior Andrea Garcia, earned the third Florida State doubles win of the day with a hard-fought match that resulted in an 8-6 win in the tiebreaker. The duo will take on Marzal/Madcur in the round of 16 tomorrow.

The second seed, junior Carla Touly, and sophomore Emmanuelle Salas fell in the first round to North Florida’s Gomez/Gorches 8-5.

In the first round of singles, the Garnet and Gold went 6-2. Das battled in a three-set match before losing 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 to No. 68 Tsveta Dimitrova of Florida. Oparenovic won the first set 6-4 before losing the next two 6-3, 6-4 to Yuna Ito of Miami. The Seminoles turned it around in the final six singles matches, winning all of them. Hule took down Daniela Ramirez of Georgia State in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. She was joined by four other Seminoles who won in straight. Mikulski defeated Lucia Marzal of Miami 7-5, 6-3, Garcia took down Lucie Renault of Stetson 6-1, 6-2, Touly defeated Andrea Stanescu of Georgia State 6-2, 6-1 and Salas rounded out the straight set wins for the Noles with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Evelyn Tiron of USF. Rahmanparast capped off the six singles wins in the first round with a three-set win over Julia Ascua of FGCU 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (1).

In the round of 32, Hule fell to Marlee Zein of Florida 6-3, 6-4 and Garcia lost in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to No. 65 Ida Jarlskog of Florida. The Seminoles bounced back with three more wins as Touly, Salas and Mikulski all won in straight sets. Touly defeated Eleni Chritofi of Georgia 6-2, 6-0 and Salas took down Katie Kubicz of Florida 6-1, 6-0. Mikulski cruised through the first set with a 6-1 win but battled in the second set, winning it 7-6 (6). The day finished with Rahmanparast losing 6-0, 6-2 in the round of 32 to No. 87 Rebeka Stolmer.

Play will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the doubles round of 16 and quarterfinals. That will be followed up with the singles round of 16 and consolations.

The doubles the singles champions will earn an automatic bid into the Oracle/ITA National Fall Championships in Surprise, Ariz. held Nov. 7-11.
