TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 18th-ranked Florida State women’s tennis team improved to 19-5 on the season and 5-2 in the ACC by defeating the 33rd-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Saturday, 6-3. The win over the Yellow Jackets insured the Lady Seminoles of their fourth winningest season in school history. The last time the Lady Seminoles won over 19 matches was in 1982, when they went 23-17. The loss for Georgia Tech drops them to 2-4 in the ACC and 11-7 overall.
The Lady Seminoles opened the day winning five of six singles matches to ensure the victory and make the doubles points inconsequential. Georgia Tech was able to win two of three doubles matches however, to close the final margin to 6-3.
The Lady Seminoles were led by freshman Alida Gallovits, the country’s 84th-ranked player, who won at No. 1 singles over Sabrina Pardo, 6-1, 6-4. Fellow freshman Jessica Balbuena clinched the match for FSU with her win at No. 5 singles over Georgia Tech’s Tamarra Jenkins, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Other singles winners for FSU were sophomore Nanette Duxin at No. 3, junior Kia Asberg at No. 4, and junior Ali Weber at No. 6.
The country’s 40th-ranked doubles team of Gallovits and Duxin were upset today by Georgia Tech’s Pardo and Mason Miller, 8-2. The only doubles point for Florida State came from Asberg and sophomore Natalie Carratala at No. 3.
