Women’s Tennis Loses Heartbreaker to 29th Ranked Florida International, 4-3
Dumitrescu, Denny and Balbuena picked up wins for the Seminoles.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In a decision that came down to a tiebreaker in the last singles match, the Seminoles fell to Florida International University, 4-3, Saturday. With the loss, the Seminoles fall to 8-7 on the season. The Seminoles still lead Florida International in the all-time series 10-2.

The Seminoles and the Golden Panthers split the first two doubles matches. Despite losing their first two games, senior Alida Gallovits and sophomore Christina Denny won eight of the next nine games to defeat Maria Montoya and Nicky Rosenberg, 8-3. This would prove not enough as the tandem of sophomore Anca Dumitrescu and junior Beth Lawrence would fall to Mei Ly and Agnes Buronyi in a tiebreak, 9-8 (5). With that win, the Golden Panthers clenched the doubles point.

In singles action, no. 33 Dumitrescu defeated Annelise Rose 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 in a close match at the no. 1 position. After losing the first set 6-2, Denny was able to take the second and third set to defeat Maria Montoya, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Senior Jessica Balbuena also won at the no. 4 position for the Seminoles. With the match on the line, Nicky Rosenberg narrowly defeated Meredith Fish at no. 6 singles (4-6, 6-2, 7-6) to give the Golden Panthers their fourth point and the victory.

The Seminoles will face the South Florida Bulls Monday, March 11th at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University. The match will begin at 11 a.m.
