ATLANTA, GA. – The Florida State Lady Seminoles dropped another heart-breaker to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons today, this time in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. For the second time this spring, Wake Forest got by Florida State by a score of 5-4. Wake Forest, ranked 17th in the country and seeded second in the ACC Tournament, moves on to the Finals to face either (1) Duke or (4) North Carolina.
The 19th-ranked, and third-seeded Lady Seminoles started off the morning by winning four of six singles matches to go into the double portion of the match leading 4-2. Wake Forest then took all three doubles points with the clincher coming at No. 2 doubles, where the team of Anne Marie Milton and Caroline Ullring defeated FSU’s Marina Raic and Jessica Balbuena 9-8. During the regular season, Milton and Ullring had not won an ACC doubles match in three attempts.
In singles, Florida State got wins from positions No. 3 through No. 6. At No. 1 singles, FSU freshman Alida Gallovits, ranked 84th in the country, lost to the nations 11th-ranked player, Mariel Verban 7-5, 6-1. FSU sophomore Nanette Duxin also lost to a top-ranked player at No. 2 singles. Janet Bergman, who is ranked 35th in the country and was the ACC Flight Champion at No. 2 singles, defeated Duxin in two hard-fought sets, 6-4, 7-6.
For the second time this spring FSU junior Kia Asberg defeated the ACC’s Flight Champion at No. 5 singles, Anne Marie Milton. Those are the only two losses for Milton in ACC competition this season. In the only three set match of the afternoon, FSU freshman Marina Raic defeated Wake Forests Maren Haus at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. Raic and Haus were co-runner ups for the ACC Flight Championship at No. 3 singles.
FSU’s record drops to 21-6 on the season and they will return to Tallahassee to prepare for a possible opportunity to compete in the NCAA Tournament. They will find out if they are in the tournament on May 5th, when the NCAA announces their selections.
