Women’s Tennis Loses Two In First Weekend Of ACC Play

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team fell to the Terrapins of Maryland, Saturday and the Virginia Cavaliers, Sunday. The Seminoles’ record falls to 9-9, and 0-2 in conference play. In both matches, after winning the doubles point, the Seminoles could only win two singles matches in the 4-3 losses.


In Saturday’s match, the Seminoles took the no. 2 and no. 3 doubles matches to take the first point of the afternoon. At no. 2 doubles, senior Alida Gallovits and sophomore Christina Denny defeated Emily DeCamilla and Marta Jedrzejak, 8-6. In an 8-5 decision, sophomore Anca Dumitrescu and junior Beth Lawrence defeated Pamela Floro and Chloe Chavardes.


Later, in singles action, Gallovits and freshman Meredith Fish pulled off the only wins for the Seminoles. At the no. 2 position, Gallovits defeated Emily Marker in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Fish defeated Chavardes at the no. 6 position, 3-6, 6-2, (10-5).


On Sunday, the Seminoles won the doubles point, to put them ahead early, but the Cavaliers won four of six singles matches to defeat the Seminoles in a 4-3 decision. In doubles, Gallovits and Denny easily defeated twins Dora Bechliwanis and Marta Bechliwanis at the no. 2 position, 8-1. Also, the tandem of Dumitrescu and Lawrence won in doubles over Christine Kim and Amy O’Donnell, 8-6.


In singles, sophomore Dumitrescu and Gallovits nabbed wins for the Seminoles. Dumitrescu took her match over Virginia’s Henriette Williams after losing the first set (5-7, 6-1, 6-3). Teammate Gallovits defeated Jennifer Tuchband, ranked 51st nationally, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.


Upon returning home, the Seminoles will take a week off before heading on the road to Raleigh, N.C. to take on N.C. State.
