TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 19th-ranked Lady Seminole women’s tennis
team hosts three schools this weekend. Coming to town to face the Lady
Seminoles will be Jacksonville University on Friday, FIU on Saturday and
Southern Mississippi on Sunday.
FSU sophomore Alida Gallovits
continues to excel in her second year at the No. 1 singles position.
Gallovits enters this weekend 3-2 in dual match play and 12-5 overall.
Junior Nanette Duxin has won the most matches this dual match season and
has solidified the No. 2 spot with a record of 4-1. Senior Kia Asberg is
riding a two-match winning streak and is off to another fast start with 12
overall wins. Last year, Asberg was second on the team in wins with 30.
Sophomore Marina Raic was first on the team with 31 overall wins in
1998-99. Raic and senior Ali Weber have shuffled between positions No. 4
through No. 6. Sophomore Jessica Balbuena is off to a slow start but has
played every match this season for FSU at a higher position than she played
all last year.
Last season, the 21-7 Lady Seminoles defeated all three opponents
by a combined score of 25-2. The only school to muster up some points
against the Lady Noles was Florida International. FSU defeated FIU 7-2 in
1999 for their ninth win of the season. This season, the Golden Panthers
are led by sophomore Anneliese Rose and senior Alexandra Guzman. Rose is
2-1 at No. 1 singles and teams with Mariana Faustinelli to play No. 1
On Sunday, prior to the match with Southern Miss, the women’s and
men’s tennis teams will honor the junior team tennis league participants
from the fall of 1999. In October of 1999, the men’s and women’s tennis
programs hosted a junior team tennis league. Matches were held on three
Saturdays throughout the fall with FSU players serving as coaches. More
than 40 young tennis players participated in the first year of the league.
The match times for this weekend are Friday at 3:00 p.m., Saturday
at noon and Sunday at noon. All matches will be played at the Scott
Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
