AUBURN, Ala. – For the tenth time under head coach Jennifer Hyde, the No. 37 Florida State women’s tennis team (16-11, 8-7 ACC) will compete in the first round of the NCAA Tennis Championship, this time in the Auburn Regional against the No. 26 Arizona State Sun Devils (14-7, 7-3 Pac-12) at 11:00 a.m. EST at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. The winner of the match will face the winner of host No. 11 Auburn and DePaul.
Florida State returns to the NCAA Team Championship after missing out on the draw each of the last two seasons. The Seminoles have the made the tournament nine of the last 11 seasons, including eight in a row from 2007-2014 under head coach Jennifer Hyde, Florida State’s all-time winningest coach.
In the regular season, the Seminoles reeled off six straight wins in the months of March and April to put themselves into postseason position, and effectively clinched an NCAA selection by defeating Virginia in the second round of the ACC Championship.
When the Seminoles last made the NCAA draw in 2014, current senior Daniela Schippers, then a freshman, played a pivotal role in FSU’s 4-3 upset victory over Arizona in the NCAA Regionals. She has been a key cog as the only senior on the team and in the lineup, clinching two victories late in the season in singles and earning 13 consecutive doubles wins during the year.
“She’s come through in so many big occasions this season,” Hyde said of Schippers. “That’s what you want to see from your seniors. We’ve got one this year that has led the charge and set a great example for the very big underclassmen class that we have.”
As the lone senior, Schippers is the only Seminole on the roster with NCAA Championship experience and will look to the lead the young team much as she has all season long.
“I just knew that my college career had to end at NCAAs, not before,” Schippers said. “I was going to make everything possible and do everything possible to be there (in the NCAA Championship.)”
