ATLANTA, GA. –
The Florida State women’s tennis team got off to
a good start Friday in the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech.
The Seminoles earned three victories in singles competition on Friday.
In Singles Flight A, junior Alida Gallovits who is the No. 1 seed in the
tournament, received a first round bye. For her second round match Gallovits
faced and defeated Cassie Haas of Iowa 2-6, 6-3, 10-8. Gallovits faces Gene
Holman of Fuman Saurday morning. Teammate Christina Denny also competed in
the Singles Flight A draw. Denny faced and defeated Eldina Fazlic of
Illinois 3-6, 7-6(5), 14-12 in her first round match. Advacing to the second
round Denny then defeated Erin Waters of Rice in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Denny faces Marieke Gunawan of UCF Saturday morning. Florida State senior
Marina Raic entered this weekend’s tournament in the Flight B Singles
where she received a first round bye. In second round play Raic fought
Pascale Veraverbeke of Iowa to the end, before falling 6-7(3), 6-1, 8-10.
Competing for the first time as a Seminole was freshman Beth Lawrence who
received a bye in her first round match of the Flight D Singles draw. In
second round play Lawrence fell to Iowa’s B
eth Hayden 5-7, 3-6.
In doubles competition the Lady Seminoles entered the tandem of Gallovits
and Denny in Flight A. Gallovits and Denny played strong, but lost to
Georgia Tech’s Mysti Morris and Jaime Wong 4-8. On Saturday the tandem
will compete against Waters and Briand in the consolation round.
Action continues on Saturday Oct. 21st beginning at 9:00 a.m., and will
conclude Sunday afternoon.
