Women’s Tennis Wins Five Of Five Matches After The First Day Of Competition

Oct. 19, 2006

Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The Florida State women’s tennis team had an amazing start to the ITA South Regional Championships today, October 19th. The tournament is being hosted by the University of Alabama. Due to rain in the area, the teams were forced to compete indoors on four courts.

With only Flight A singles able to compete, only five Seminoles took the court. Freshman Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, Utah) started the day with a victory over Miami’s Gina Sabatino 6-1, 6-1. Senior Nicola Slater (Ayr, Scotland) faced Alabama’s Sofia Ayala to win 6-4, 7-5. Freshman Jessica Wente (Whitehouse, Texas) continued the win streak by defeating Mississippi State’s Renee Joseph 6-2, 6-3. After being moved into Flight A, sophomore Ania Rynarzewska (Inowroclaw, Poland) brought down Bethune-Cookman’s Olga Ruislova 6-2, 6-1. Junior Carolin Walter (Bingen, Germany) concluded the day with a victory over North Florida’s Vanessa Sanchez 6-2, 6-1.

“This is our second tournament in a row that we have had a really good start,” stated head coach Jennifer Hyde. “We have been working on very specific things during practice. To see everyone put those things in action made a difference today. We are going in the right direction; we just want to make sure we take it one day at a time.”

Tomorrow, Macfarlane is scheduled to face the number one player in the nation, Georgia Tech’s Kristi Miller. Slater will go on to face Whitney Benik of Florida. Wente will face eighth seed Alison Siverio of Georgia Tech. Rynarzewska will go on to face fifth seed Laura Vallverdu of Miami.
