Tallahassee, Fla. – The 2006 Seminole Invitational concluded today, October 28 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The tournament was able to conclude play; therefore, no matches will take place on Sunday. Florida State’s women’s tennis team was able to pull off four championship wins and five runner-ups.
“It was great to have so many people in the finals and those that won in the finals,” stated head coach Jennifer Hyde. “Being in the finals and being the flight champion is something that they are demanding of themselves.”
The day began with doubles matches as Florida State won the White Doubles Draw. Junior Tapiwa Marobela (Gaborone, Botswana) and sophomore Suzanna Mansour (Greenacres, Fla.) defeated Jacksonville’s Sulyos/Soldatova 8-6 to win the flight championship.
Senior Miranda Foley (Cambridge, England) and freshman Jessica Wente (Whitehouse, Texas) defeated Bethune-Cookman’s Polakova/Kendrick 8-1 to advance to the finals. They fell to South Florida’s one seed Sweeting/Duch 4-8 to take home second.
In the Garnet Draw senior Nicola Slater (Ayr, Scotland) and freshman Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, Utah) bounced back from their loss yesterday with two wins. They defeated Stetson’s Canady/Leonenko 8-5 and then routed Bethune-Cookman’s Ruislova/Powell 8-4. Junior Carolin Walter (Bingen, Germany) and sophomore Ania Rynarzewska fell to USF’s Cruz/Rai 5-8 and then lost to North Florida’s Castillo/Torres 6-8.
Singles took the court after the completions of doubles play. Slater defeated teammate Walter in the Garnet Draw by 6-4, 6-3 in the finals.
Macfarlane faced AUM’s Veverkova in the Gold Draw. She went on to win 6-4, 6-2 in the finals. In the Black Draw, Rynarzewska defaulted because of an injury in the finals to USF’s Duch.
In the White Draw, Wente defeated AUB’s Lysak 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2 to advance to the finals. Foley lost to USF’s Sweeting 5-7, 6-0 in the semifinals. In the finals, Wente faced Sweeting and won 6-4, 6-2. Foley faced AUB’s Lysak for third place and defeated her 6-4, 7-5.
“The freshmen did a great job, really playing smart tennis,” continued Hyde. “It was good to see them just continue to progress.”
Mansour played a very dramatic match against AUB’s Zuzolova in the flight champion. Zuzolova ended up winning 7-6, 5-7, 6-2.
In the Pink Draw, Marobela fell to Jacksonville’s Soldatova 6-4, 5-7, 3-6 in another impressive match for the championship.
“It was a pretty good tournament,” concluded Hyde. “The wins are defiantly coming in comparison to years past. It may not always be pretty, but they are getting it done and they are to be commended for that. I think that everyone may have been still a little warned down from last weekend’s regional tournament. I think it did affect their focus and concentration. It will be nice to have tomorrow off after finishing the tournament in two days instead of three to get ready for the Miami Invitational in two weeks.”
