Women’s Track Places Second at the USTCA Series

GAINESVILLE, FL. — The Florida State women’s track team took second place in the four-team field at the USTCA Series in Gainesville, Florida. The Lady Seminoles finished ahead of Fresno State (3rd) and the University of Illinois (4th). The host, University of Florida, won both the women’s and men’s competition.

Leading the way for the women’s team was Tonya Carter and Chinette Johnson. Carter won both the 100m dash and 200m dash, and her 23.48 time in the 200m dash was the best so far this season by a Lady Seminole. Johnson won the triple jump with a jump of 39-5. Freshman Taressa Davis had her best jump of the season, with a 38-8.25 in the triple jump to earn her third place honors. Johnson also finished second in the long jump, joining teammates Makiba Batten (Discus) and Samantha George (400m) with second place finishes for FSU. Also finishing in second place in their respective events were the two relay teams for the Lady Seminoles, the 4x100m relay team and the 4x400m relay team. The 4x400m relay team had it’s best time of the season, finishing the race in 3:36.31. Batten beat her previous team high in the shot put with a score of 45.01.75 to finish in fourth place.

Greg Jack led the Seminole men by winning the Javelin throw with a toss of 189’11. Three Seminoles secured second place finishes in their respective events. Zyris Hill ran the fastest time by a Seminole in the 400m sprints with a time of 46.93. Freshman Christian Bland high jumped himself into second place with a jump of 6’09.50. Jason Dean tied his best mark of the season in the pole vault with a vault of 17’00.75, which stands as the top mark this season for a Seminole. Sophomore Tavaris Spradley set the best times of the season for Florida State in both the 100m sprint and 200m sprint. Both times earned him fifth place finishes. The new time to beat in the 100m dash is 10.58, and in the 200m dash Spradley ran a 21.19.

Florida State will be in competition again this weekend as the Seminoles host the Seminole Twilight this Saturday here in Tallahassee.
