TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Lady Seminole volleyball team pulled out a five-game
victory over Liberty Saturday afternoon, 15-12, 13-15, 15-9, 14-16, 15-7,
in Tully Gym. The victory evened Florida State’s record at 5-5 while
Liberty fell to 4-6 with the loss.
Middle hitters Aisha Thornton and Norisha Campbell led the Lady
Seminoles in game one. Each posted a pair of blocks as FSU took the first
game 15-12. The Lady Flames rebounded in game two to edge the Lady
Seminoles 15-13 and even the match a one game apiece.
Florida State out-hit Liberty .438 to .216 in the third game
enroute to a 15-9 win, but again the Lady Flames evened the match,
rallying to take game four 16-14. In the decisive fifth game, freshman
Kristin Frye came up big at the net with a pair of blocks and junior
Jennifer Werrick blasted three kills as the Lady Seminoles picked up a
15-7 victory to take the match.
“We are excited that we are going into the ACC (matches) on a
positive note,” said head coach Dr. Cecile Reynaud after the match.
“We’ve learned a lot about our team this weekend. Now we can prepare to
start our conference schedule.”
Individually, Thornton led the Lady Seminoles with 22 kills and a
.594 hitting percentage. Werrick and Jamie Hibbard each posted
double-doubles for FSU. Werrick notched 21 kills and 18 digs while
Hibbard tallied 64 assists and a team-high 22 digs. Frye totaled a
career-high 7 block assists, part of Florida State’s 12 blocks in the
For Liberty, Anthonia Akpama posted 30 kills, her second 30-plus
kill total in the Lady Flames’ last three matches. Kyrie Dorn led the
Liberty defense with 25 digs.
Florida State will begin Atlantic Coast Conference play next
weekend when it travels to Duke on Friday and Wake Forest on Saturday.
The Lady Seminoles’ next home match is Tuesday, September 28 when FSU
hosts rival Florida at 7:00 p.m. in Tully Gymnasium.
