Florida State

  • 1998 Record: 4-0.
  • Conference: 0-0 in the ACC.
  • Current Streak: Won 4.
  • Series vs. South Florida: The Lady Seminoles lead the series 31-3, but USF won the last meeting in 5 games in Gainesville last December.
  • Series vs. California: The series is tied 1-1. Cal knocked FSU out of the NCAA Tournament in 1989 with a 4-game victory in Tallahassee.
  • Series vs. Utah State: Florida State lost its only previous meeting with Utah State in 1981.


AVCA/USA Today Coaches Poll

Florida State moved up two spots to 22nd in the latest poll released September 7th. None of FSU’s weekend opponents are currently ranked.


FSU 3, SE Louisiana 0

The Lady Seminoles swept the Lady Lions in the opening round of the FSU Classic last Friday. Thornton’s 14 and Werrick’s 11 kills led the team.


FSU 3, Florida International 0

FSU opened Saturday with a sweep of FIU. Schneider blasted 13 kills. Hawks added 5 aces.


FSU 3, Northern Iowa 2

FSU needed 5 games to edge a tough UNI team. Thornton tallied 20 kills and 7 blocks. Schneider, Werrick, and Bolten each totaled double-doubles.


FSU 3, Central Florida 0

The Lady Seminoles cruised past UCF on Tuesday. Thornton & Werrick again led FSU in kills.


South Florida Bulls


  • Current Record: 4-0.
  • 1997 Record: 26-9.

  • Coach: Perri Hankins, 8th season at USF.
  • Starters Returning/Lost: 3/3.
  • Standouts: Freshman OH Michelle Collier (5.83 kpg) and Senior OH Rachel Wulff (3.83 kpg).


Cal-Berkeley Golden Bears

  • Current Record: 2-3.
  • 1997 Record: 8-19.
  • Conference: Pacific 10.
  • Coach: Sue Woodstra, 3rd year at California.
  • Starters Returning/Lost: 3/3.
  • Standouts: Sophomore OHs Jameka Stevens (3.33 kpg) and Alicia Perry (2.94 kpg, 3.81 dpg).


Utah State Aggies

  • Current Record: 3-1.
  • 1997 Record: 18-15.
  • Conference: Big West.
  • Coach: Ginny Alexander, 3rd season at USU.
  • Starters Returning/Lost: 6/0.
  • Standouts: Sophomores OH Melissa Schoepf (3.09 kpg, 1.73 dpg) and MB Denae Mohlman.


The Revenge Factor

  • Florida State will be out to avenge post-season tournament losses to each of its three opponents in the USF Classic this weekend. South Florida eliminated FSU from the NCAA Tournament last year with a 8-15, 15-4, 15-13, 7-15, 15-9 defeat of the Lady Seminoles in Gainesville. In FSU’s last meeting with California, the Golden Bears knocked FSU out of the 1989 NCAAs, downing the Noles 15-12, 15-10, 10-15, 15-10 in Tallahassee. Finally, the only meeting between Utah State and FSU came in the 3rd place game of the AIAW National Tournament in 1981. The Aggies beat the Lady Seminoles in a best 2-of-3 format 15-9, 13-15, 15-10.   • One of FSU’s strong points over the weekend was its serve. Susan Hawks recorded a career-high 5 service aces against FIU after posting 4 against SLU on Friday night. During the Classic, the Lady Seminoles talled 23 aces in 11 games.

With a strong finish last season, 6 starters, and 10 letterwinners returning, the Lady Seminoles have gained attention across the country. In addition to FSU’s current #22 ranking int he AVCA Poll, Volleyball Magazine listed Florida State among its top 20 teams in its preseason poll.
