Women’s Volleyball Tops FIU But Falls To Indiana

Sept. 4, 1999

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team took a
three-set win over Florida International with scores of 15-3, 15-8,
15-13 this afternoon, but fell to Indiana in three games, 6-15, 14-16,
4-15, this evening in the Tallahassee Democrat Florida State Classic at
Tully Gymnasium. With a record of 3-0 in the tournament and on the
season, Indiana was crowned the Classic’s champion. FSU goes to 2-2 on
the season. In other Classic action, Indiana defeated South Carolina
3-1 in the 10 a.m., match while the Gamecocks responded with a 3-0 win
over FIU in the 4:30 contest.

FSU’s Jennifer Werrick was unstoppable against Florida
International, recording a match-high 19 kills on her way to a .571
hitting performance. The Tribe hit .330 for the match while the Golden
Panthers sputtered to just .096 hitting in the contest. At the net, FSU
players recorded eight blocks to FIU’s three.

The Lady Seminoles’ youth was a factor against the Hoosiers.
Indiana had four returning starters on the floor while FSU had four
freshman take the court to start the match. Indiana dominated game one,
but the Tribe came out strong in game two and led the match 10-4 before
allowing the Hoosiers to climb back for the 16-14 victory. In game
three, it was all Indiana. FSU continued to block well, outdoing the
Hoosiers 8-6.

“In the second game, I saw flashes of brillance on the floor,”
FSU Head Coach Dr. Cecile Reynaud said. “We were passing well, setting
well, blocking and hitting well, so I know we have the capability to
play at that level. Now we just need to work on learning to concentrate
longer. We’re young and the more experience these players get, the
better we will become.”

Florida State’s Werrick earned all-tournament team honors. She
was joined by Florida International’s Jessica Andreolas, South
Carolina’s Danika Taylor and Megan Hosp and Indiana’s Kristina Sanderson
and Cydryce Carter. The Hoosiers’ Amanda Welter was named the Classic’s
MVP.

The Lady Seminoles will take the show on the road for the first
time this season as they head to Dekalb, Ill., Sept. 10-11, for the
Northern Illinois Invitational.
