Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida State freshman Chase Wood won the Bedford Cup singles Championship at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the Florida State campus.
Wood captured his first singles championship of his college career and second total championship on Saturday morning at the Bedford Cup. Wood jumped out to a 4-2 lead against Mikjail Sokolovskiy of UCF. Wood capped off the first set with a 6-4 win. In the second set, Wood went up 3-1 before falling behind 4-3. Sokolovski took the second set 7-6 (2). In the third set tiebreaker, Wood outlasted UCF 10-6 to take the Bedford Cup singles championship.
“I thought Chase had a very gutsy effort,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Playing five singles matches in three days. He played a really good player today in Mikjail Sokolovski. He pulled out the third set tiebreaker. I like how at crucial times he came forward to the net and put some volleys away.”
Wood and sophomore Alex Knaff fell to Miami in the semifinals 6-4.
Poullain Advances to the Round of 16 at the ITA All-American Tournament
In the round of 16 redshirt senior Lucas Poullain took on No. 3 Petros Chrysochs of Wake Forest. Poullain lost in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
In the quarterfinals of consolation doubles, Poullain and redshirt senior Jose Gracia Advanced to the semifinals after a withdraw due to injury from their opponent.
Seminole senior Guy Iradukunda took on Wayne Montgomery of Georgia. Iradukunda lost the first set 6-1 and won the second set 6-3 and the third set 7-5. Iradukunda then lost in the quarterfinals.
