BATON ROUGE, La. –
Florida State University senior Whitney Wright is in a tie for first place in the individual standings and the Seminole women’s golf team is in first place in the team standings after the first round of the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic at the University Club. Wright carded the lowest score of her career and is one of two players who carded a two-under par score over the first 18 holes of the event. The Seminoles hold a seven stroke lead over LSU, the host school, with 36 holes left to play in the event.
Florida State, ranked 37th in the nation in the latest GolfStat poll, carded its best round of the spring season – a six-over par score of 293. The Seminoles have three golfers in the top five of the individual standings with Wright (tied for first), junior All-American Caroline Westrup (tied for fifth) and freshman Macarena Silva (tied for fifth) all either in or in striking distance of the individual lead. Wright leads the event and Westrup and Silva are within three strokes of the individual lead. Wright is tied for the individual lead with Laura Crawford of Wake Forest.
Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) began her round quickly with two birdies on her first three holes and was two-under par before the round was barely one hour old. She was even par on her final six holes of the front nine and made the turn at two-under par. Wright began her back nine with a turkey – three consecutive birdies – and was four under par after 12 holes. She closed the back nine at one under to finish the round at two-under par.
Silva (Santiago, Chile) played the second best round of her first season at Florida State as she carded a one-over par 73. She carded three birdies and 14 holes of par or better golf in earning a place in the top five of the individual standings. Westrup (Ahus, Sweden) also carded a one-over par score of 73 and is tied with Silva and five other golfers for fifth place.
The Seminoles begin play in the second round looking to win their first event since the spring of 2007 when they won the Florida State hosted Chrysler Challenge at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. The Seminoles also won the Cougar Classic during the fall of 2006.
