Xavier Lee Talks About The Off-Season And The Competition For FSU’s Starting QB Job

Feb. 28, 2007

FSU quarterback Xavier Lee made the first start of his Seminole career last season versus Maryland and showed the nation the skills that made the Daytona Beach product Florida’s Mr. Football in 2003. He sat down with reporters this week and here are a few of the things the sophomore said about the off-season and competing for the starting job with Drew Weatherford.

ON WHAT THE COACHES ARE TELLING HIM ABOUT THE STARTING JOB:
(Coach Fisher) has told me (the job is open) before. There is a clean slate between the both of us. It depends on how hard you work, learn the playbook and stuff.

ON HIS LEVEL OF EXCITEMENT IN COMPETING FOR THE STARTING JOB:
That makes me very excited because I have been waiting for this opportunity ever since I have gotten here.

ON HIS HEALTH:
My shoulder has been holding up well. I have been working hard in the weight room. You can even ask Coach (Jon) Jost. I have been staying focused on what I have to do.

ON WHAT HE HAS BEEN WORKING ON IN THE OFF-SEASON:
I have been working on getting stronger because I found out that is one of the reasons I hurt my shoulder. I have been working on my mechanics as well. That’s another reason my shoulder came up short.

ON WATCHING Jimbo Fisher’s OFFENSE ON TAPE:
I have been looking at a lot of film of LSU and what’s being planned for next season. What I see in the film is he takes what the defense gives. That is the kind of offense we need. He will nickel and dime you but he isn’t afraid to go deep either. Having a coach that is going to put a first round pick (JaMarcus Russell) in the NFL makes me think this guy really knows what he is talking about and I should really listen to what he is saying.

ON PLAYING IN Jimbo Fisher’s OFFENSE:
I will still be able (to show off my arm) but I need to be a lot more accurate with (the football).
