SHANGHAI, China – Katrina Young and Amy Cozad are ready to represent the United States at the 2014 FINA Diving World Cup in Shanghai, which runs from July 15-20 at the Oriental Sports Center. Young and Cozad will contest in the 10-meter synchronized on Thursday.
Young and Cozad earned their spot to don the Red, White and Blue by winning the event at the World Cup Synchro Trials back in April, which were held in their home pool at the Morcom Aquatics Center. The duo dove consistent throughout prelims and finals, scoring a tally of 626.88 after 10 dives.
“I’m ecstatic,” Young said. “This is the biggest meet I’ve ever competed in. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and to go there with Amy, who has already been there, we’re feeling pretty confident.”
Following trials, Young and Cozad were put to the test in their second outing as a pair and won silver at the FINA Diving Grand Prix in San Juan Puerto Rico in early May. They posted scored a total of 293.16, falling second to China’s Ren Qian and Siyn Ji (327.48).
“Ever since we’ve qualified in April, we’ve been in this limbo just waiting to go,” Cozad said. “I can’t wait to compete and get back on the world scene. Katrina is the best synchro partner I’ve had and diving together is very comfortable for us and that feeling came pretty quick. I know we can do well, but the goal is to have a great attitude, do our best and at the end of the day, we’re still going to be best friends.”
Prelims for Young and Cozad will begin at 10 a.m. (UTC) on July 17. The top 12 pairs will advance to finals later that afternoon.
Universal Sports will offer delayed coverage of finals at 8 p.m. and will be available on universalsports.com.
