Young Sits in Fifth After Semifinals

May 16, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-  Rising redshirt junior Katrina Young sits in fifth place after the semifinals of the women’s 10-meter platform event at the World Championship Trials. Young tallied a score of 609.35 after ten dives, while diving in her home pool at the Morcom Aquatics Center.

“She dove pretty solid,” head diving coach Patrick Jeffrey said. “We’ve put more degree of difficulty in her list and the progress is there and once she’s comfortable, she’s going to light it up.  Katrina set herself up nicely for Sunday’s finals as she’s only a little over 30 points away from making the world championship roster.”

Young started the day off with a score of 305.65 in prelims after five dives, placing her fourth.  During the semifinal round, Young added 303.70 more points, setting her up in fifth place for Sunday’s final.

The leader, Victoria Lamp of Tennessee tallied 691.45, while Amy Cozad of Indiana followed in second with a 642.20.

“I felt pretty good about today,” Young said. “I put myself in the running for both the World Championships and World University Games.  But I have to go out there and hit my dives in order to make one of the meets. I really want it, so I am going to go after it.”

The women’s 10-meter platform final is slated for 12:25 p.m. on Sunday.

Also taking place today was the men’s 3-meter preliminaries and semifinals.  Leading through two rounds is Olympic bronze medalist Kristian Ipsen from Stanford diving.  Ipsen scored 872.25 points while sitting in second is Samuel Dorman from Miami Diving with 817.75. Olympic bronze medalist Troy Dumais from Longhorn Aquatics is in fourth with 782.35.

The men’s 3-meter finals are scheduled for 11:15 a.m. on Sunday.

Friday’s events will kick-off at 10 a.m. with the preliminaries of the women’s women’s 3-meter springboard that will feature rising senior Kelsey Goodman. Goodman placed eighth on 1-meter earlier this week.

The men’s 10-meter platform prelims will follow at 12:30. Both semifinals for men’s and women’s will conclude the session.

Incoming freshman Dominic Giordano will be representing Pitt Aquatic Club Divers and compete in the men’s platform. Hailing from Wexford, Pa., the PIAA state record holder has qualified to compete on platform where he will look to improve on his 10th place finish from the 2012 U.S. Summer Nationals.

Also competing in the men’s 10-meter platform is the Olympic gold medalist and “Splash” star David Boudia.

“Tomorrow is going to be an exciting day for us,” Jeffrey said. “But everyone should come out to watch David Boudia. I don’t think an Olympic gold medalist is going to get back to Tallahassee in quite some time and watching platform diving live is just a different dynamic.  You shouldn’t want to miss out on this.”

Tickets are sold daily at $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children or weekly passes can be purchased for $20.00.
