Looking Back: Maryland
By: Brandon Mellor, Seminoles.com
The Maryland Terrapins sure were kind to the Florida State football team two weeks in a row during the latter half of the 2010 season.
A week before Maryland defeated NC State to send the Seminoles to the ACC Championship game in Charlotte, NC, the Terrapins fell victim to the ‘Noles on their home turf in College Park, Md.
Looking back, FSU’s 30-16 come-from-behind win was critical in the squad’s pursuit for a return trip to the league title match. But entering the game, there was some doubts as to what could be expected from a team coming off a three-game span that featured crushing defeats to NC State and North Carolina and one emotional roller-coaster victory against Clemson.
Not helping matters was the fact that FSU was without the services of starting tailback Jermaine Thomas against Maryland and quarterback Christian Ponder was still nursing a sore elbow that had kept him on the sidelines of the Clemson win.
While Ponder would return to throw for 170 yards and a score and Chris Thompson would rack up 92 yards (including a 70-yard score), it was the defense that earned Florida State the win.
In total, the ‘Noles forced four Terrapin turnovers — two interceptions and two fumbles — and Nick Moody sealed it with a nifty 90-yard interception return with Maryland threatening to score late.
In many ways, the FSU-Maryland game proved to be a microcosm of the Seminoles’ season as a whole. As injuries mounted on the offensive side, the defense — a year after being the weak link for Florida State — usually had an answer.
